China Overtakes US As World Leader in Scientific Research Papers
A new report by the Japan’s Ministry of Science and Technology and the National Institute of Science and Technology Policy confirms that China has overtaken America as the world leader for scientific research papers and studies that have a high impact. China has published more scientific papers than the US and Germany about Papertyper combined. The figures are calculated using averages of annual publications between 2018 and 2020. Data was compiled by Clarivate.
China has overtaken the US as the world leader in the field of scientific research.
China’s scientific research output has surpassed that of the United States in a number of indicators such as patents and the number of papers published. According to the US’s National Science Foundation, China had published 426,000 scientific papers in 2016 compared to the US’s forty thousand. This has resulted in serious competition for US scientists in a variety of areas.
Despite the dominance of America in terms of scientific output and quality, China has outperformed the US in terms of. China was fourth, while the US was third in this category , respectively. However, neither country is tops in the total number of the number of times its publications are cited. In reality, Switzerland and Sweden produced the most highly cited publications, followed by the US and the EU and China. These results indicate that each country has its own strengths and weaknesses in terms of research in science.
China’s scientists have benefited from large-scale investments and government policies. Their research output is subject to selective monitoring and even politicalization. To restrict the free flow of information and to hinder communication of results the government has imposed restrictions on internet use. The Chinese government has treated the SARS epidemic from 2002 to 2003 and the covid-19 pandemic as “state secrets”. In response to these policies the Chinese scientist was required to sign a declaration that was filled with false rumors about his work.
It is also the world’s leader in “high-impact” studies.
The US and China have become world top researchers in the field of scientific research papers, and China has surpassed the United States in some key metrics. According to the National Institute of Science and Technology Policy (NISTP), China publishes 407,181 scientific research papers each year, which is nearly two-thirds higher than the US. In contrast, the US publishes only 293,434 journal papers per year.
The US has a long tradition of publishing research papers that are high-quality. The United States published the highest number of “high impact” papers in 2016. A high-impact research paper consists of a large number of references. The more citations research paper has, the greater its “citation impact.”
